Lake America and Lake Ontario Begin Sharing the Same Water

President Donald Trump signed an order on Thursday, Aug. 27, renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” amid worsening trade tensions with Canada, after the United States had raised tariffs on Canadian imports about a week earlier. The order’s first implementation packet reached the shoreline with one instruction printed twice: U.S. officers were to treat the water as Lake America, while Canadian officers were to treat it as Lake Ontario.

The Mid-Lake Checkpoint

At the international line, inspectors began stopping the same wave from opposite sides. A ferry leaving Canada was required to announce its entry into Lake Ontario, stop, then announce its entry into Lake America before continuing. Passengers who had already disembarked were asked to return briefly so their shoes could complete the crossing.

The procedure expanded to weather. During the first storm, crews stretched tarps over the U.S. half and placed rainwater falling there in customs hold while checking whether each drop had crossed the line in the cloud or only below it. One bucket was released after an officer determined it had landed on both sides and could be classified as a bilateral shipment.

The Water Answers

The dispute ended when the lake issued a waterproof map that redrew the arrangement from the water’s perspective: the United States became South Shore and Canada became North Shore. The map showed no international line through the lake, leaving inspectors with two jurisdictions, two names, and nowhere to stand between them.
