Record Transfer Window Ends With One Midfielder Everywhere

Premier League clubs reportedly spent a record £3.48 billion during the summer window, including more than £400 million by newly promoted Ipswich, Coventry City and Hull City combined. In the final 48 hours, the spending was consolidated into one anonymous midfielder, who was sold through all 20 clubs and issued a shirt by each of them.

The exchange began when the midfielder’s original club sold him to its nearest rival for £173 million, then bought him back for £181 million before lunch. Each club repeated the transaction at a higher price, citing the player’s demonstrated ability to arrive, sign a form and leave before training. By the tenth transfer, he was carrying a garment bag and asking clubs to stop printing his name on the back until they knew which spelling they preferred.

The arrangement gave every team a profit on paper. Directors described their squads as rebuilt, although the midfielder’s medical file had become the size of a tactics board and the league’s registration system listed him as both available and already selected. When a manager attempted to put him on the bench, the bench was transferred to another club as part of the midfielder’s add-on package.

At the closing deadline, the player returned to his original locker valued at £3.46 billion, wearing 20 shirts at once. The league’s final accounting showed every club with a gain, while the only item marked as outstanding was his employment. He asked which club he played for and was told that question would reduce the asset’s value.
