AI Funding Chart's Biggest Bar Bursts Through the Wall
A wall chart comparing the biggest companies’ AI spending has been moved outdoors after its tallest bar crossed the finance department.
The first visitors read the chart from the parking lot, following one colored bar per company while one pixel still represented a billion dollars committed to artificial intelligence.
Facilities workers extended the paper along the sidewalk, then down the block, while accountants carried their chairs outside to remain within the chart’s approved viewing area. The other bars were lengthened to preserve the comparison, turning a neat row of rectangles into a set of competing avenues.
The scale becomes the story
When one company announced another AI investment, the graph could not simply add a segment. Its existing bar was already blocking the loading dock, so the printer changed the unit from one pixel per billion dollars to one pixel per ten billion. The smaller companies disappeared into a strip of color barely visible beside the curb.
We wanted to make the numbers accessible, and they are now accessible from three neighborhoods.

The exhibit has since been granted temporary airspace because the leading bar reached the roofline and began casting shade over the graph’s legend. Visitors now follow a painted arrow from the title to the spending figures, then continue walking until they find the end of the bar, which remains under construction.

The story behind this story
Original story TL;DR
Current forecasts and reporting show AI infrastructure spending concentrated among major hyperscalers. Gartner forecasts $2.59 trillion in worldwide AI spending during 2026, while company-level analyses project hundreds of billions in combined capital expenditure by firms including Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Oracle; those capital-expenditure totals also include broader cloud and data-centre infrastructure rather than AI alone.
