Swiggy Dineout Orders Make Cinema Seats Impossible to Leave

Swiggy Dineout’s Order-in-Cinemas lets moviegoers scan a QR code, pay for food through the app and receive it at their seats. The first problem appeared when a seat map connected to the cinema’s point-of-sale system treated an order not as food headed to a person, but as a person attached to the order.

At one participating auditorium, the delivery status became the seat’s status. A customer who stood up to take a phone call was stopped in the aisle because the system still showed an open popcorn order at their location. When the customer offered to take the popcorn along, the usher explained that the order had been assigned to the chair, not its occupant.

The rule spread faster than the food. The Impact and Showbizz integrations, which were meant to connect cinema systems with the new service, began displaying occupied seats around every undelivered item. A family with two unpaid-for sauces was asked to remain together after the credits, while a man who had ordered during the trailers waited through the entire film for a runner carrying his missing napkin.

By closing time, the aisle had cleared but the seats had not. Several customers were permitted to leave only after accepting delivery of food they no longer wanted, including one abandoned combo handed to a chair whose customer had gone home. The auditorium’s final active order was a tub of popcorn still waiting patiently for its audience.
