Tamil Nadu’s Summer Arrives With a Delivery Receipt

A week of hot summer weather has been logged as a physical consignment, putting every district on notice that a shipment is due.

Clerks in a Tamil Nadu district office measure empty rooms as a huge transparent crate of sunlight and hot air arrives on a trolley, with labeled shadows waiting nearby.

At 6 a.m. Monday, the Tamil Nadu Seasonal Intake Bureau issued an intake order requiring every district to identify a receiving site before noon. The order was attached to the forecast that had been stamped RECEIVED for hot summer conditions across the state.

By noon, district offices had begun measuring unused rooms, bus shelters and the narrow strip behind government refrigerators. The bureau’s handling note allowed heat to be stored indoors or outdoors, but prohibited stacking it near anything already described as “warm.”

Clerks said the first batch arrived without visible packaging, occupying chairs, stairwells and the space directly above several parked scooters. Each district was issued one red rubber stamp to mark surfaces that had accepted the delivery, though the stamp itself softened before lunch.

We can request a delay, but we cannot return weather after it has crossed the forecast boundary,” said bureau registrar Meenakshi Vannan. “The supplier has already listed the shipment as non-refundable.”

On Wednesday, officials moved the remaining heat toward the coast, where it immediately occupied the shade. The bureau then placed the state’s shadows on a waiting list for temporary shelter, leaving residents to stand beside their own outlines while clerks searched for floor space.
