Today’s Real News Held Back At Loading Dock
A municipal courier has stopped the morning edition until the day’s facts can be weighed, stamped, and returned in readable order.
At 6:12 a.m., a sealed crate marked for the Municipal Reading Room arrived on a handcart, accompanied by a delivery slip listing its contents as “events occurring today.” The receiving clerk put it on the intake scale. The needle swung past the limit, though the crate contained only folded paper and one warm envelope that had not yet decided what it said.
The Office of Current Reality rejected the shipment on procedural grounds. Under its morning rule, an event must finish happening before it can be entered as news, but the crate was required to leave before the day became yesterday. A red stamp changed its status from “news” to “pending actuality.”
The edition waits for the past
By noon, the reading room had moved its chairs to the loading dock so visitors could watch the crate mature. Each time a clerk lifted the lid, one page became an account of something that had just occurred, while another page quietly returned to its blank side. The courier was instructed not to blink over the paperwork.
At 11:59 p.m., inspectors finally cleared the shipment for storage. The crate was lighter, the envelope had gone cold, and every page now described yesterday. Before the first copy could reach the reading room, the scale began climbing again from inside the locked dock.
